- Feature functionality for levels, such as:
- Apparition that follows the player character, disappearing when they are looked at.
- Elevator doors opening and closing properly when buttons are pressed and when level begins
- Ensuring that menu UI is properly laid out and functional
- Fading to black between different menu selections
- Button reactions on hovering and pressing
All work was created in Godot.
Haley was a member of Angry Cat Marmalade during the 2024 Koia PowerUP! Game Jam, with a theme of empowering women. The team got together and came up with the plan to create an anomaly inspired game where a woman would get through puzzles to arrive safely to her job interview. Thus, Keep Calm, Stay Alert was born.
Haley took on UI, Programming, and Level Design roles within the team, helping out where others may need the assistance. Research she had conducted led to Shepard’s GDC talk of interactive storytelling through the environment, which met up nicely with Keep Calm, Stay Alert’s spatial anomaly gameplay by using a change in environment as visual cues to whether the player should report weird occurrences or continue towards their goal. Chow’s GDC talk of integrating UI into the environment was considered when creating the game and inspired Haley to use the elevator display screen to show the player what floor they were on rather than using an immersion breaking HUD element.
